Does the Bezos "Amazon" divorce have any takeaways in the real world?

Consider this number for a moment: 137,000,000,000.

When prefaced with a dollar sign, that is the amount that family law commentators underscore in what seems a fair bet for the priciest divorce in history.

Give or take a few billion, $137 billion is reportedly what's at stake relative to property division in the slated divorce negotiations between Amazon power couple Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos.

That decoupling might reasonably be amicable and without peril. The couple has publicly stated that it will be, and there is no reason to doubt their sincerity.

Divorce writers frequently make the point that marital dissolution involving an uncommonly large pool of assets yields a corresponding complexity and, sometimes, added stress and even acrimony when it comes to equitable property distribution. That makes sense in select instances, of course. Notably high-asset decouplings can easily involve myriad sources of wealth and varied asset classes. That immediately ratchets up the complexity when it comes to identifying, valuing and fairly dividing marital property.

What about the Bezos split, though? As a recent Bloomberg article notes, it features "unimaginable sums of money."

Concededly, that makes it exceptional - OK, unique with all those above-referenced zeroes. Notwithstanding its outsized dimensions, though, the basic concerns that Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos face in their divorce are likely not all that different from what legions of splitting-up spouses are commonly focused upon.

And that is this, as we note on a page of our website addressing divorce-linked asset division at the Illinois Law Office of Jamie Mitchell, LLC: a fair property distribution "made in just proportions."

That is the common denominator surrounding most divorce-tied asset considerations. And it holds true whether you're a middle-class couple or soon-to-be exes splitting up a fortune pegged at scores of billions of dollars.

Questions or concerns regarding the equitable distribution of marital assets in a divorce can be directed to an experienced divorce attorney.
